손쉽게 업무 환경을 꾸밀 수 있도록 구색을 맞춘 서비스가 (무료 및 유료로) 제공되고 있는데, 사용자들이 접속할 수 있는 웹주소를 내 도메인을 이용해 지정할 수 있습니다.
이 중에서 독립 도메인으로 싸이트 URL이 고정되는 서비스는 Web Pages 하나 뿐이고, 나머지 서비스는 도메인 포워딩을 통해 google.com/~ 형식의 페이지로 포워딩되고 있습니다.
독립 도메인을 지원하는가?
내 도메인이 DOMAIN.COM이라고 가정하면, 각각의 서비스는 다음과 같은 주소로 포워딩되고 있지요.
- Start Page: start.DOMAIN.COM -> http://partnerpage.google.com/DOMAIN.COM
- Email: mail.DOMAIN.COM -> http://mail.google.com/a/DOMAIN.COM
- Chat: 도메인 설정 없음
- Calendar: calendar.DOMAIN.COM -> http://www.google.com/calendar/hosted/DOMAIN.COM
- Web Pages: http://www.DOMAIN.COM (그대로 유지)
- Docs: docs.DOMAIN.COM -> http://docs.google.com/a/DOMAIN.COM
- Sites: sites.DOMAIN.COM -> http://sites.google.com/a/DOMAIN.COM
그러므로, Google Apps 전체가 독립 도메인을 본격적으로 지원한다고 볼 수는 없을 것 같습니다. Web Pages와 유사하게 사용될 수 있는 wiki 서비스인 Sites도 독립 도메인을 지원한다면 좋겠으나, 아직은 Google Apps 중 Web Pages 서비스만 독립 도메인을 지원하는 서비스라고 볼 수 있겠습니다.
CNAME 설정이 필요한가?
Google Apps 대쉬보드의 URL 설정 페이지에는 아래와 같은 안내가 나오는데,
To enable your custom URLs, you must create CNAME records with your domain host.내 도메인을 사용하기 위해서는 네임 서버 설정에 CNAME 항목 조정이 필요하다는 안내입니다. 그런데, 도메인 포워딩은 네임서버 설정을 통해서 간단히 구현될 수 있고, CNAME 설정 등은 필요치 않으니, 어떤 이유로 CNAME 설정이 반드시 필요하다고 요구하면서, 독립 도메인을 보여 주지 않고 단지 포워딩만 제공하는 것인지 잘 모르겠습니다. 독립 도메인 지원이 없는 다음 카페 등으로 내 도메인을 포워딩해 놓는 것과 Google Apps의 도메인 변경은 큰 차이가 없게 되는 것 같습니다 (Web Pages 제외).
Google Apps에 포함되는 서비스는 아니지만, 구글의 Blogger, Feedburner 등은 Daum 의 Tistory.com 이나 TNC 의 Textcube.com 처럼 독립 도메인 설정이 가능하도록 지원하고 있습니다.
오픈마루 스투디오의 Springnote.com 은 Google Sites의 기능과 중복되는 부분이 많은 wiki 서비스인데, 독립 도메인 지원을 초기부터 검토하고 있었으나, 아직 발표가 없네요.

Google Apps의 독립 도메인 지원은 아직 부분적이고, 주로 포워딩만 제공되고 있어 약간 아쉽습니다. 혹시 Google Apps의 서비스 (중 특히 Sites) URL을 내 도메인으로 유지할 수 있는 방법이 있다면 좋겠습니다.
